Watercolour lotus on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large lotus flower fills the frame, with loose black linework outlining the petals and a yellow stamen cluster at the centre. The petals are washed with blue, teal, pink, orange, purple and yellow, with splashes of colour that extend beyond the outlines to mimic watercolour paint. The tattoo sits on the upper arm and shoulder against a blurred indoor background.

The paint had gone off in the jar again, so Marisol stirred it with a bent knife and hoped the pigment would come back. Her uncle's studio above the fish market smelled of linseed and vinegar, and the window faced the harbour lamps, which smeared into gold whenever the rain came sideways. He had taught her to wash a flower the way you would wash a bruise: quickly, without apology, letting the colours find their own edges. Tonight she had a commission that needed a lotus for a widow in Leith who wanted it bright enough to forgive her husband.

She worked from midnight until the ferry horn sounded. Blue first, pooled along the outer petals where the light would catch it. Then teal bleeding into the green, then a pink so hot it nearly spat when the brush touched the paper. The black line she drew last, loose and fast, because her uncle always said a line should look like it had been argued with. When she lifted her hand the stamen cluster was a small yellow sun sitting at the centre of everything, and a drop of purple had flicked off the brush and landed on the windowsill, where it looked exactly like a second flower.
At dawn she wrapped the sheet in tissue and carried it down the wet steps. The widow was waiting at the door in a coat too large for her, and she unfolded the paper with both hands. For a long moment she said nothing. Then she pressed her thumb to the purple splash on the edge, the one that had gone outside the lines, and said it was the only honest part of the picture.
