Pancake stack, strawberries and rose on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a tall stack of pancakes with golden syrup running down the side, surrounded by blueberries and strawberries, with a red rose at the lower left. A floral border with a small strawberry at the top frames the main design. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the pancakes and fruit a rounded, dimensional look, and the teal background contrasts with the warm tones. A second close-up photo on the right shows the strawberries and blueberries in detail.

The batter was lumpy again, and Mrs Pardoe from the chandlery had already rapped the counter twice before I'd flipped the first pancake. Gulls were working the bins behind Cove Diner, the fog was lifting off the harbour wall, and I had exactly four strawberries left in the tub. Dad would have sorted the lumps with a whisk and a lecture. I used a fork and kept my mouth shut.

Stacking was the part I loved. Six pancakes, golden at the edges, each one wide as a dinner plate. I poured the syrup slowly so it ran down the side in amber threads, the way Dad taught me, then scattered blueberries like I was sowing seed. I halved the strawberries and fanned them beside the stack. Pearl, who washed up on Saturdays, pressed his nose to the hatch and asked who the plate was for.

"Lilian," I said. She came in every Tuesday at half seven, took the table by the window, and ordered without looking at the menu. She never ate much. She wanted the window seat and somebody to bring her a stack with the syrup going down the side. Today the chair was empty. I carried the plate across anyway, and a single red rose lay on the cloth where her hand had been, its petals already curling at the edges.

I found a note tucked under the saucer: Same again, next week. Keep the seat warm. I ate the top pancake myself, standing by the window where she used to sit. The syrup had gone thick and cold, but I ate it all the same.
