Watercolour clock on a chest
Traditional · Chest · Colour · Photo
A clock face with black Roman numerals and hands sits at the centre of the chest, with a small red heart near the middle and black heart shapes below it. The linework is loose and sketchy, with blue, red, orange and green washes bleeding outward around the dial in a painterly way. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against bare skin, with the shoulders and collarbone visible at the top.

Madame Orsolya had stopped the great clock above the ring at ten to eleven on the night the tent lost its second pole, and nobody in Harrow Green had thought to wind it since. Dolan the strongman wanted to smash it for scrap. Tilly, who rode the grey mare and was the only one still paid on time, wanted it left exactly as it was, its black Roman numerals gone soft at the edges, hands pointing at a quarter past nobody's hour.

Piet mended the canvas by lamplight, stitching blue patches over the tears until the roof looked like a wet painting of the sky. He never liked the clock. Someone had painted a small red heart at its centre where the hub should be, and below the numerals the children had scratched black hearts into the glaze, one for each season the show had played a town that loved it.
On the last Thursday the wagons were packed and the council letter had come, saying the field would not be let again. Tilly climbed the cracked platform, reached for the glass, and found it was not glass at all but a sheet of paper painted to look like it. Behind it was only the old wall, and a note in Orsolya's looping hand: wind me when you are somewhere you can stay.
Tilly pocketed the key, dropped it into her boot, and went down to the mare, who was already stamping at the road.
