Pocket watch tattoo on chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A pocket watch with Roman numerals and a ring bow at the top sits on the upper chest. The watch face and case are shaded in soft greys with highlights on the metal edge, giving it a realistic, three-dimensional look. Other ink is visible at the top edge of the frame, and the tattoo is centred against the bare skin.

The clockmaker's daughter in Harrowgate sold her father's watches from a trestle under the market roof, and when the rain came sideways off the moor she would stand with her back to the stalls and wind each one by hand so the springs would not seize. Nobody bought the old ones. They wanted the bright new steel with the glowing numbers, so the cases sat in a tin with the lid propped open and the faces turned to the sky.

One wet Thursday a man in a heavy coat stopped and asked the time. She told him it was twenty to eleven, though the church bell had not yet rung. He laughed and said the watch in his pocket was running slow, and she said that was because it had been carried by someone who did not want to be early for anything. He bought the silver one with the Roman numerals and the ring at the top, paid in coppers, and walked away into the rain without looking back at the clock on the post.
After that the market kept its own time by her. Farmers set their carts by her call, and the bell-ringer sent a boy down to ask her whether it was truly half past. She always said yes, and it always was, though nobody could say how she knew.
On the first frost of the year the man came back with the watch open in his palm. The hands had stopped at the hour she had named, and he asked her to make it run again. She took it, held it to her ear, and found nothing wrong with the works. She closed the case, gave it back, and told him that some things only keep going while someone is waiting for them.
