Triangle eye sigil in a circle on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A fresh black linework tattoo sits on the lower leg, covered in cling film. A one-eyed triangle with a bow tie and horizontal bands is centred inside a double-ringed circle, with radiating hatch lines behind it. Small symbols such as a question mark, glasses, a heart, a star and a hand sit in the segments of the outer ring.

Pell had scrubbed the galley floor twice before the ferry cleared the Tyne, and still the grease from the fryers clung to the grate. At four in the morning the only sounds were the rattle of the deep freeze and the slap of water against the hull. He was counting tins of pilchards when the wall clock stopped at a quarter past, and the steel shutter over the hatch hummed as though someone on the other side had leaned against it.

Nobody came through. Instead a card slid under the door, printed with a ring of small pictures: a pair of spectacles, a heart with a crooked stem, a hand with its fingers spread, a star inside a circle, and a question mark that seemed to lean towards him. In the centre a triangle sat on its base with one eye open at the top and a black bow tie across its middle, beams fanning out behind it like sunrise on a cheap print. Pell had seen that same triangle on the lid of his late mother's shortbread tin, and he had never once asked what it meant.
He turned the card over. On the back, in pencil, someone had written his name, then a list of things he had never told anybody: how often he had burnt the porridge, the cousin he had not rung since Easter, the word he said to the gulls. Beneath the list was a single line. Tell us what you want from the wheel.
Pell laughed, because the galley was empty and he was tired and the ship was a long way from land. Then he took the flour scoop from its hook, tapped the question mark with it, and felt the whole ring turn a degree under his fingers. The triangle's eye blinked. Somewhere above, the tannoy crackled and a voice said, very politely, that the hot water would be off until breakfast.
