Watercolour feather and swallows on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A large feather runs diagonally across the upper back, with a fine black and white quill and detailed barbs shaded in blue, teal and purple. Soft washes of pink, violet and turquoise bleed out around the feather, with small splatter marks. Three small black swallows fly towards the right shoulder, and the photograph is taken from behind with the person's head and hair partly visible at the top of the frame.

Halfway through the morning count, Ilse Varga had lost track of the swallows twice. They came over the ridge in threes and fives, dropping low over the wire where the two countries met at the river, and each time she tried to log them on the clipboard the pen skipped. Beside her, Pavel kept his eyes on the barrier arm and his mind on a paper cup of coffee going cold.

"They don't know there's a border," he said. "Good for them." She had been ringing birds on the far bank for eleven years. She knew the swallows did not care about flags, but she had also watched men on both sides spend a whole season deciding who could stand where. She unhooked a dark flight feather from the mesh of her net, one that had snagged there when a bird came in too fast, and turned it so the light found the violet at its tip.

She had meant to keep it for the collection drawer. Instead she held it out across the painted line on the tarmac. Pavel hesitated, then took it. "For the other side," she said. He laughed, then stopped laughing. He walked it to the middle of the crossing, where the river was loudest, and opened his hand. The wind lifted it over the wire, quick and sideways, and for a moment it looked like one more swallow.

That afternoon the count stood at seven. She wrote seven, crossed it out, and wrote eight. She did not explain it to anyone.
