Blue feather with flying birds on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a large blue feather with a dark brown quill running vertically down the side of the torso. Several small black bird silhouettes drift off the top right of the feather, creating a sense of movement. The feather is shaded with layered blues and black, with soft gradients along the barbs, and the colour is set against a lightly lit background of skin.

When the lord's son came to claim her at the spring fair, he brought a cloak of grey wool and a ring of tin. She put the ring on the table and told him she would marry the man who could catch a bird in the air. He laughed, and then he went out to the far field, and by evening he had come back with nothing in his hands but a cut across his palm from a fence wire, and he had not caught anything at all.
The girl took the blue feather from the nest, went down to the water meadow where the rushes stood as tall as a man, and held the quill between her finger and thumb. She blew once along the barbs. The feather lifted, shivered, and broke apart into a flock of small black swifts that rose over the willows and scattered like pepper flung on a white cloth.
She watched them until they were specks. Then she walked home the long way, past the lord's gate, and left the tin ring in the rushes for the herons to sort out.
