Botanical tattoo on an upper arm with purple and teal watercolour-style flowers, black linework and a geometric mandala near the elbow.

Watercolour florals and geometric motifs on an arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A bouquet of loosely drawn flowers, including poppy-like blooms, climbs the upper arm and fades into grasses at the lower end. Fine black linework is combined with soft purple and teal washes, and dotted lines and a circular geometric mandala sit alongside a small diamond shape. The tattoo is shown on a bare arm against a blurred indoor background, with a dark top and a grey sleeve at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had been told that a poppy keeps its own calendar, and that a seed head is a clock if you know how to read it. So when the carter's boy came up the lane shouting that the Halloway fields had gone purple overnight, she did not run. She took the bucket, the tin of pins and her grandmother's paper compass, and walked out past the hedges where the grass stood knee high and sour with dew.

The poppies had come up in a ring, which was wrong. Nobody sowed them that way. They leaned towards a single dark bloom at the centre, wide as a cartwheel and bruised at the heart, and around its stem the teal grasses bent like the strings of a harp someone had dropped. Marta knelt and counted the seed pods on the nearest stalk. Eleven. She counted the next. Eleven. Each one held a small diamond of light in its crown, the way a window catches the sun.

She sat on the wet ground until noon, drawing the pattern in the mud with a stick. When she closed the circle, the lines met like the teeth of a lock. Then she understood what the field wanted. It wanted the count kept true, one pod for every year the valley had gone without its proper reckoning. She had been away eleven years. She pulled the first pod, broke it open and let the black seed run into her palm. The poppies sighed all at once and straightened, and the carter's boy, who had been watching from the gate, went home and told everyone the field had rested.
