Fine line tattoo on an upper arm combining red and green watercolour-style flowers with black geometric spirograph circles, dots and hatched leaf shapes.

Floral and geometric linework on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a cluster of coral-red flowers with green stems, softly washed in and blended with fine black linework. Black geometric elements, including a looping spirograph-like circle, thin vertical and diagonal lines, small dots and a hatched leaf shape, frame the florals. The design runs down the outer upper arm against a plain pale background, with the subject's face and torso not shown.

Mira found the bundle wedged behind the ticket machine at Hollin Road, just after the last stopping train had sighed out of the platform and left the concourse smelling of wet coats. Someone had bound a dozen coral-red stems with a strip of graph paper, the green ends snapped unevenly, the petals already bruising at the edges.

She unfolded the paper under the strip light. Someone had drawn on it in careful biro: a spirograph loop folding in on itself, three ruled lines running off the edge like rails, a row of pencilled dots that looked like lamps along the down platform. In one corner sat a hatched leaf, shaded so finely it might have been a fingerprint.

She carried it up to the signal box, where Tobias Feeney sat with his tea going cold beside the lever frame. He turned the paper over with one thick thumb and went quiet for a while. "Mrs Okafor's boy used to draw these for his sister," he said at last. "Says the circle's a wheel and the lines keep it on track." He nodded at the flowers. "Indian pinks. They grow on the embankment. Nobody plants them."

Mira pinned the sheet above the frame, between the timetable and the signal diagram. Outside, the 6.42 bell rang across the empty fields, and the red stems caught the lamplight for the length of a breath before the train came through and blurred them away.
