Watercolour splashes on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two separate splashes of ink sit on the upper arm, one higher near the shoulder and one lower. The shapes are soft-edged blooms with fine spatter and drips, imitating watercolour paint rather than solid outlines. Pink, magenta, violet and blue blend within each splash against a plain pale background.

The harbour master wants the lifeboat house at dusk, and I cannot get the blue right. Mr Pell taught me the trick years ago: wet the paper until it shines, load the brush, touch it once, then walk away and let the pigment choose its own road. Yesterday a drop of violet ran straight across the cliff and I left it there, because it was braver than anything I would have planned.
A boy from the coastguard cottages stood at my elbow this morning and asked what I was making. I said a splash. He said splashes are what happen when you stop trying to make anything, and then he went off down the shingle before I could argue. I have been turning that over all afternoon, along with the pale spot where the water fell and nothing took.
I am keeping the spoiled sheet, the blue bleeding into the pink like the sky giving up on being one colour. Come in March if the trains run. Bring the good tin of cadmium, and leave your opinions about perspective at home. Yours, Nell.
