Watercolour fox, owl and flower tattoos

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

This collage shows five photographs of tattoos on skin. The main image has a loose orange and red watercolour fox on the upper arm, and the smaller images show a feather on the wrist, a dark-outlined flower with blue and orange fill, a hummingbird with pink blossoms and green splashes, and a barn owl with soft brown and blue shading. The work combines soft washes, paint-like splashes and some defined linework, with mostly vivid colour throughout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox came down to the river the morning after the big rain, when the water ran the colour of weak tea and carried whole branches past the mill. Marta had been sent to fetch the paints from the chapel loft, and she found the old woman already there, kneeling on a sack with her sleeves rolled to the elbow, dabbing a brush into a tin lid of rust-red pigment.

"You'll want the orange," said the old woman, without looking up. "Not the yellow. The yellow always goes to mud on wet plaster."

Marta asked why anyone would paint a fox on a wall that was already crumbling. The old woman laughed, a sound like a dropped jug, and said the wall was not the point. The point was the moment before the fox decided to run, when it was half in the reeds and half out, and everything about it was still deciding. She flicked a splash of colour across the plaster and it bled into a shape that might have been a shoulder or a shadow of a leaf.

By noon the fox was finished, or nearly. It leaned across the wall with one forefoot lifted, its tail a bright smear of flame, its legs ending in dark brown strokes like it had stepped through a puddle of ink. Marta thought it looked hunted and happy at once. The old woman stood back, wiped her hands on her apron, and pointed at the single dry pinprick of white left in its eye.

"Leave that," she said. "Everything worth looking at has one bit the water didn't reach."
