Watercolour macaw on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A bird resembling a macaw is shown in flight, with outstretched wings and a long tail that trails down the back. The linework is loose and the shading is built from paint-like washes, with splashes of blue and pink spreading outward. Warm reds and oranges dominate the bird, with blue accents along the tail and lower wing.

Old Marta kept the last of the cochineal pots in her cellar on the island of Corrin Vael, because her grandmother had said the sea would one day ask for them back. The autumn the red macaw came down out of the north wind, it landed on the rail of her boat with its feathers soaked through, as if it had flown through a dye vat. The fishermen wanted to wring its neck. Marta said no, and fetched it a dish of wet bread.

The bird would not eat. It sat on the rail and shook itself, and where the drops fell the grey planks bloomed orange and blue. Marta had heard that the mainland hills had gone pale that year, that the rains had washed every colour out of the villages, and she thought the bird had been sent to fetch what it could. She took it down to the cellar and lifted the lid of the cochineal pot. The macaw dipped one wing, then the other, and flew up through the rafters so fast that the lamp went out.
In the morning the bay was lined with colour. Every boat had a brushed stripe of pink along its hull, the nets hung like flags, and the sky over the water burned for an hour each evening after that. The island paid the bird with one pot of cochineal every autumn, left on the rail, and it never once asked for more.
When Marta died, her grandchildren found a single blue feather lying in the tide line. They held it up to the light, and it bled slowly into the water, the way a fresh wash does on wet paper, until nothing was left but a faint sky the colour of the sea.
