Watercolour owl on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large owl faces forward with yellow eyes and a dark beak, its body built from loose blue and green washes with scattered dark dots. Soft, bleeding edges and faint fine marks give the shading a painted, watercolour quality. The design fills most of the forearm against a plain dark background.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the draught that comes through the broken arch. This is the tale of the Owl of Hallowmere Keep, which was not an owl at all, not at first. It was Maud Corrin, the miller's girl, who climbed the north tower the night the tide came over the causeway and the lord's men went looking for the bells.

The keep had been drowned in blue that winter, the way a page goes when the ink runs in the rain. Green weed grew on every stair. Maud went up with a candle in one hand and a bramble branch in the other, because her grandmother had told her that a branch carried into a ruin would keep the wrong things from following. The candle guttered at the top step. In its place, two yellow eyes opened in the dark above the broken sill.
The owl did not speak. It only looked at her the way the old lord had looked at tax ledgers, long and unimpressed, until she set down the branch and told it everything: the bells were in the sea, the lord lay in his bed with a fever, and the miller's family had nothing left to pay with but her. The owl shook out its wings and dots of water flew from them like spilt ink across the stones. Where each drop landed, a feather grew back into the wall.
Maud walked home by dawn with a single blue-grey feather tucked in her bodice and no bells to show for it. The owl still sits on the north sill, they say, painted in washes of sea and moss, and if you look at it long enough it blinks. Mind your candle on the stairs. Some of us never came down at all.
