Watercolour paw print on a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A paw print sits on the top of a foot, drawn with loose black outlines and filled with soft watercolour washes. The colour runs through pink, blue, orange and teal, with splashes and drips that extend beyond the outline. The tattoo is centred on the frame against a dark background.

Dust had turned to grey paste on the forecourt by the time Ruth Pardoe saw the prints. The storm had come over the ridge at dusk, the first real rain in eleven months, and it had left the Route 9 shoulder slick and shining. She stood in her rubber boots by the diesel pump with a mop in one hand and counted them: four toes, a pad like a fat thumbprint, and a line of them crossing the apron towards the scrubland, each one slowly filling with water.

Her father had kept a dog called Sully for fourteen years, a rangy yellow thing that rode in the cab of his truck and barked at every lorry that passed the roadhouse. Sully had been gone since March. Ruth had told herself coyote, or a rancher's pickup, or nothing at all. Now she followed the trail past the tyre stack and the dead cactus fence, water dripping off the sage, the prints wandering in loops as though whoever made them had been hunting for a door.

They ended at the old water tank, where the ground was soft. Beside the last print someone had left a tin of watercolours, the lid prised open, cakes of pink and teal and orange gone sticky in the wet. A passing painter, maybe. Or nothing. She knelt and pressed her palm into the mud beside the print. It was cool, and it was bigger than her hand.

Behind her the sun broke under the cloud and the road lit up, every puddle the colour of those spilt paints, pink, blue, orange and teal, running out across the desert until the prints dissolved into the glare. She stayed where she was until the light thinned, listening for a bark that did not come, and then walked back to the pumps with her boots full of sky.
