Watercolour paw print tattoo on ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows a paw print tattoo in four views, including close-ups of the foot and a wider shot of the ankle and heel. The main toe pad and four toe pads are filled with black ink, with soft grey shading and small black ink spatters. Red, orange, teal and green watercolour-style splashes surround the print, and the photos are set against a dark background.

Mind the ice on the lower gate, Mother Hale said, though nobody had asked her anything. Fenn had been gone three days, a black collie with one ear folded flat, and the snow had come down over Thorne Farm like a sheet thrown over furniture nobody meant to use again.

Abel went out with the lantern and a tin of biscuits for bait. By the paint shed he found the first prints, deep and round, each toe pressed into the drift with its own little spatter. Where the prints crossed the cart track they picked up colour. Orange from the pumpkin seed spilt off the trailer, red from the rowan berries the wind had strewn, a smear of teal from the gate he had painted in August and never finished. The dog had walked through all of it on her way somewhere.
The trail ran down to the mill pond and stopped at the edge of the black ice. Abel held the lantern out over the water and called her name until his voice cracked against the cold. Then something moved on the far bank. Fenn sat upright in the reeds, watching him, not one flake of snow on her back. She had not gone out on the ice. She had gone round the pond, twice, the long way, and each time her pads pressed the same ring into the frost, as if she were counting the way home.
Mother Hale was waiting by the stove when they came in, Fenn steaming at her feet. Well, she said, you found the long way round. That is all a trail was ever for. The snow keeps every track until the thaw, and then it forgets them, but the colours soak down into the ground and come up green in the spring, right where the dog had been.
