Watercolour peony across upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A large peony bloom in red, pink, orange and yellow sits on the right side of the upper back, with loose green brushstroke foliage extending to the left toward the shoulder blade. The shading is soft and blended with visible wash-like edges, and the petals are built from layered strokes. The composition is cropped from the back of the head to the bra strap, with the tattoo as the focal point.

The wet had got into the paper again, so Winifred laid the sheets across the kitchen table and weighted their corners with jam jars. Her brother had posted the paints from Hong Kong in a biscuit tin, twelve pans of pigment gone hard as slate. She had spent a week coaxing them back with a warm thumb and a drop of gum arabic, and still the red came out tired.

Nobody in Hebden Bridge believed a peony could be painted in the wet. Tobias Quaye, who kept the last nursery on the canal, had told her the blooms split if you rushed them, and that the leaves should be fast and rough, like a man signing for a parcel. She tried it his way. She loaded the brush with sap green and dragged it left across the page in three quick strokes, then sat back and watched the colour bleed into the margin where she had meant to stop.
The flower would not hold. Every time she laid down the orange it ran into the pink, and the petals went soft at their edges like lamp-lit silk. She nearly tore the sheet. Instead she tilted the board, let the wash pool at the lowest petal, and blotted the rest with a corner of her late husband's handkerchief, which she kept in the drawer for exactly this kind of mess.
When Tobias came up the path on Saturday with a cutting wrapped in newspaper, she had the picture pinned to the back door. He looked at it for a long time. Then he said the flower had opened without asking anyone's permission, which was the only way peonies ever did, and he carried the painting home under his arm like a kettle he meant to keep.
