Watercolour rose design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A pink rose in full bloom is drawn with black ink outlines and layered red and pink watercolour washes. Two green leaves and a small bud sit at the lower left, with loose splatters of pink and green paint across the page. The design is centred on a plain pale background.

By the third week of the thaw the gardeners at Ormsby Hall had stopped asking you to paint the roses properly, because you never did. You wet the paper first, flooding it with rainwater from the butt until the pink bled where it pleased, and only then drew the black line round each petal, the way a fence goes up after the sheep are already in the lettuces.

Queen Idony sent for you on a grey Tuesday. She wanted her late husband's rose done for the great hall, every petal exact, and she stood over your board with her arms folded while you worked. The bud went in green, then the outer leaves. You were halfway through the bloom when the courier rode up the drive with the letter from the northern garrison, and your hand jerked. A ribbon of crimson shot across the paper and ran down over the stem like a thread of thorn-blood.
She did not speak for a long while. You waited for the sharp word, the dismissal, the cold walk back to the servants' stair. Instead she leaned in and studied the spatter, the green running off the leaves, the careless drip that had turned a rose into something still bleeding from its own thorn.
"Leave that," she said. "Finish the rest for the hall. The old one comes north with me." She rolled the sheet under her arm and went out to meet the riders, and you stood in the cold studio with your brushes, wondering how a single shaken hand had kept more of the day than the careful one.
