Watercolour rose design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A single rose bloom is painted in watercolour, with its outer petals curling open around a tighter centre. Fine dark outlines and vein-like lines define the petal edges, while soft purple, pink and cream washes create the shading. The rose is centred on a plain off-white background with no other elements.

Sit yourself down on the flour sack, love, and mind the tray by your boot. No, the other side. There. You'll want to know why Tobiah Crane was selling a rose before the sun was up, and that starts with a girl called Nell and a bottle of rosewater she had no business carrying up the back stairs.

Nell was his apprentice that winter. She could pipe sugar better than any hand on Pelham Lane, but her roses would not open. Every night she made one, cream at the heart and violet at the edges where she dusted it, and every morning the outer petals had gone soft and bruised, purple then pink then cream where the lamp caught them. Tobiah only shrugged. A rose, he said, opens when nobody is asking it to.
So one night she gave up asking. She left the shutters open, let the oven tick itself cool, and sat on the step with her hands in her lap. Somewhere near the bottom of the dark she heard the bolt slide on the back door, slow and careful, the way you'd open a door for someone who was sleeping. Nobody came in. When she turned round the shop was empty and the cold air smelt of rain and roses.
At first light the bloom on the marble had unfurled its outer petals, curled back like someone stretching after a long sleep. Tobiah sold it before the shutters were fully up, to a man who paid in brass buttons. Nell never learned who had come to the door that night. But the rose stayed on the sill for the rest of the week, and every petal of it was turned towards the window.
