Red realistic rose with shaded petals

Realism · Colour · Photo

A large, open red rose fills most of the frame, with petals curling outward and a dark centre. The petals are rendered with smooth blended shading, moving from deep crimson and maroon to bright orange-red and yellow highlights. Thin green lines and a pale cream background sit around the rose, giving it a soft, layered composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Pellew show had lost its last three towns to rain, and by October the wagons stood in a field outside Ludlow with their cream paint cracking like old cheese. Mabel Pellew, who had never once been seen to sit down, sent her grandson up the lane with a jug and a promise. "Bring back the rose that grows against the vicar's wall," she said. "A show with nothing left to sell has to sell something."

The rose was a dark, bruise-coloured thing when he reached it, its petals gone black at the tips as if someone had held a match to them. The vicar's housekeeper watched him cut it from the wall with a kitchen knife. "It's the last one," she said. "It knows it." He carried it back cupped in both hands, the way you carry a bird that has flown into a window, and the petals kept opening in the warmth of his palms: crimson at the edges, then bright orange where the light caught them, then yellow at the heart like a lamp left burning in an empty house.

That night Mabel set the rose in a jar on the centre pole and told the three performers left to take their places. Nobody believed a flower could fill a tent. But when the lamps went down, the rose gave off a glow that spread across the sawdust and climbed the canvas, and the old grey horse in the back pen lifted its head and stamped twice, the way it had when the band still played.

In the morning the field was full of people from three villages who had seen the light from the road. They paid in eggs, boots and loose coins. Mabel pressed one petal flat in her ledger and gave the stem to her grandson to keep. The show stayed on the road for twelve more years, and the rose never once turned fully brown.
