Watercolour spiral tattoo across two forearms
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms are pressed together, and a tattoo runs across both, with a central spiral shaded in purple, pink and pale blue. Loose black brushstrokes and splashes curl around the spiral, with blue washes fading out at the edges. The photograph is taken from above, showing the wrists and hands at the bottom and a wallet, glasses and a mug on the wooden table around them.

Flour gets into everything before the sky does. By half four my forearms are dusted white and the ovens have been ticking since three, and Dilys is shouting from the back that the rye has gone flat again. Nobody else is awake in Pontypridd except the milk lorry and the cat that sits on the bin outside.

I roll the cinnamon dough out on the steel bench, one long pale sheet, then brush it with butter and sugar gone dark with spice. My grandfather did this in a kitchen above the chapel, leaning his whole weight into the pin until the dough gave up and spread. He called the swirl the only honest thing a baker makes, because the coil shows exactly how it was folded, and nobody can pretend otherwise. I believed him for about twenty years.
This morning the roll is tight at one end and loose at the other, and when I cut it the slices look like something spilled and set, a bit of sunrise in a bun. I could reshape them, but the dough is cold and the timer is already counting. So I line the slices up in their tins, scatter the last of the sugar, and leave the crooked ones at the front.
When the trays come out, the window over the sink has gone from black to the colour of a bruise fading, and the steam off the buns curls up in loose grey loops. Dilys takes one from the top tray, tears it open, and says it is the best thing she has eaten all week. I do not tell her which one I shaped.
