The gate was chained from the inside, which was the first thing Nell didn't like. Beyond it the walled garden lay grey with dew, and the dahlias along the south path had been cut back in the night, every stem snipped at the same slant, as neat as a surgeon's work.

Mr Aske had painted the shed door himself the summer before he died. Above the latch he'd nailed a triangle of old oak boarding, and inside it a blue eye that seemed to follow you down the path, with teal and yellow flowers spilling round its edges like a crown pushed down to the brows. The village children called it the Gardener's Eye. Nell had always thought it a bit morbid, but he'd said a garden needed one thing that never blinked.
She sat in the shed that night with the lamp turned low and the ledger open on her knees. Her uncle's hand filled every page with sowing dates and frost counts, and on the last, underlined twice, were the words: Check the eye before you check the beds. She looked up at the painted iris through the crack in the door and saw nothing but paint. Then a figure crossed the far wall, stopped among the dahlias, and bent low over the stems with a lantern hidden under a coat.
Nell didn't go out. She dipped the brush in the teal pot and painted a second eye on the inside of the door, a little lower, where the lantern light would fall. Whoever was cutting the flowers would see it when they came back for the lock. The lantern went out, the gate creaked shut, and in the morning she found the stems laid in neat rows along the path, every cut clean, and not one of them taken.
