Colour watercolour-style splash tattoo with a black semicolon and dot on the forearm, with the word Love in script above it.

Watercolour splash and semicolon on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large watercolour-style splash covers the forearm, with black semicolon and full stop shapes at the centre. The splashes blend orange, red, blue and purple, with grey-black ink in places, and drips extend towards the wrist. Script lettering reading Love sits at the top of the frame, and the background is dark fabric.

Master Corin had already lifted the spoiled page by one corner when Ysolde caught his wrist. The river-blue ink from the morning's mixing had run across the royal proclamation, blooming orange where the lamp oil had touched it, and the scribe was swearing softly in the dialect of the salt marshes. "Throw it on the fire," he said. "The Queen does not want a blot on her decree."

She turned the sheet to the window. In the drying light the splashes looked less like ruin than weather: a red sky breaking over a purple hill, blue rain falling sideways, a grey stain where the ink had pooled and refused to spread. Near the centre, a single black hook had survived the spill, sitting above a round dot, and the two marks seemed to be arguing about how long a sentence should go on.

"That hook is a held breath," she said. "The old grammarians of Vellmere wrote that it joins what the full stop would sever. The sentence is not over. It is only waiting to be finished."

Corin grunted and let go. For three days the proclamation stayed on his desk, damp and ugly, and nobody in the guildhall dared ask what he meant to do with it. On the fourth morning he sent for her, and she found the page pinned above the dye-vats, the splashes framed in plain wood, and beneath it a new line in his cramped hand: *Continued.*
