Blue flowers and ink splatter down a calf
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of blue five-petalled flowers with orange centres, joined by thin black branches and green buds. Splashes and drips of black and blue ink spread across the design, giving a loose, painted look with soft colour blending. The composition runs vertically along the limb against a dark background.

The ink went over the galley bulkhead the morning we came out past the Spurn, a whole pot of it, purple-blue from the chandler's in Grimsby, because Dennis the purser had left the lid off to top up his ledger and the boat rolled exactly when he reached for the blotter. By noon the stain had dried in a fan across the tiles above the hotplate, and Skipper Haig stood in the doorway with his tea going cold and said it looked like a bruise on a cod.

Nobody else could bear to scrub it. Dennis wanted it painted over in battleship grey. I told him grey would only show the shape of the splash through, the way it does on a cloud. Young Kit, who was fifteen and had been sick twice since Hull, said he could make something of it. He had a tin of watercolours his gran gave him and a brush cut down to three hairs, and for three nights in the watch below he worked at it with his tongue between his teeth.
What he painted was forget-me-nots, the little five-petalled sort that grow in the ditches behind my mother's house, blue as a gas flame with yellow eyes. He ran them up the wall in a loose stem, and where the old ink had splashed he let the blue bleed into it and left black threads for branches, as if the flowers had come up through the wreck of the thing rather than in spite of it. Dennis called it vandalism. Haig stopped chewing when he saw it.
The galley has been repainted twice since. The new coat goes on, the damp comes through, and the flowers come back in the same places as if they remember where they were. Haig won't let anyone touch that wall. When someone asks why, he just taps the tiles and says the boy got the blue right.
