Watercolour splash tattoo on the ankle

Ankle · Colour · Photo

The tattoo is a cluster of loose blue, teal, purple and pink blotches arranged in a rough ring, with small splatter dots around the edges. The shapes have soft, blended edges and no outlines, giving a painted watercolour effect. Colour dominates the composition against the plain skin of the lower leg, with a pavement and a parked car in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Fenwick's paint box slipped from the tailgate of his van outside the Co-op on a wet Thursday in March. The tin lid popped open, and cakes of ultramarine, teal, violet and rose skidded across the pavement by the bus shelter and into the gutter.

Eleanor from the chemist's next door was the one who knelt down. She was fifty-one and had never painted anything but shop labels and the odd window card for the Whitsun fete. She gathered what she could, but the rainwater had already softened the cakes, and the colours ran into one another in loose, bleeding rings. A boy with a satchel asked if she was going to pick the rest up. She said the pavement could keep what it wanted.

Over the following week the town walked around the stain without discussing it. The baker's delivery van rolled wide of it. Mrs Doyle's pram stopped at its edge and turned. Each morning Eleanor came out with a jam jar of water and a stiff brush and scrubbed at the edges, and each morning she found the splatter a little more settled, the blue deeper, the purple gone soft as a bruise fading. By Friday it looked less like spilt paint and more like a small sky that had come down to rest.

When Fenwick returned from the hospital in Lincoln, he stood on the kerb with his hands in his coat for a long time. Then he took a pencil from his pocket and, without a word, dotted a ring of small specks around the edge of the stain, the way the spray had flown. He looked at Eleanor over the top of his glasses. "Leave it," he said. "The rain does the finishing."
