Rainbow paint splash on the inner wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small paint splash tattoo sits on the inner wrist, with red and orange blotches at the base and vertical drips running up in yellow, green and blue. The edges are soft and irregular, with lighter areas where the colour thins, giving a loose watercolour look. The design is centred on the wrist and set against a plain grey fabric background.

The bread came out of the oven grey that morning, and Old Hanne said the village would not eat grey bread. She sent the boy out to the shed for the paint tins her husband had used on the shop sign before he died, and told him not to spill anything on the step.

Piet found five tins with their lids rusted on. He knocked them open with a spoon, and out came red, orange, yellow, green and a blue so deep it looked like the inside of a well. Hanne stirred each colour into a bowl of dough, and the dough took the colour the way wet wool takes dye, slowly and then all at once. By then the sky over the mill had gone the colour of ash.
They worked until the window greyed. Piet flicked the blue from the spoon over the sill, and it ran down the whitewash in thin drips that crept past the bench and into the cellar grate. Hanne laughed for the first time that winter and said the paint had decided for itself where the morning should start.
When the bread came out, every loaf had streaks of colour running through it, like light through a church window. People came up the lane in their boots and paid a penny for a piece of it. Hanne kept the blue tin back and never used it again. She said it had done its work on the wall, and that was enough for one tin.
