Outline cat with watercolour splashes on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small black linework outline of a cat seen from behind, with its head turned and tail curling down to the bottom left. Soft pink, purple and blue watercolour-style washes fill the body and spill outwards around the outline. The tattoo sits centrally on the arm against a plain skin background, with the cat clearly framed.

Every spring the widow Marrow planted her beans along the south wall, and every spring the grey tom from the vicarage came over the fence to sit in the middle of the row and tell her she had planted them wrong. Nobody in the village owned him. They called him Dusk because he only came out when the light went thin.

One June the rain went on for nine days. The paint on the potting shed blistered, the foxgloves bent flat, and the stream at the bottom of the garden rose until it lapped the lowest step. On the tenth morning she found the cat sitting on the wet path, looking back over his shoulder at the gate as though he expected her to follow. She followed. He led her through the hedge gap, along the lane and down to the mill race, where a boy from the farm had gone in after a ball and was hanging by one hand from a willow root.

She pulled the boy out with her apron knotted round his wrist and her skirts soaked to the hip. When she turned around the cat was already on the far bank, his tail curling down into the reeds like a question nobody had asked yet.

He never came back to the beans. The wall stayed bare that year and the next. Each evening after that she set a saucer of milk by the gate, and each morning it was empty, and the beans grew tall and crooked along the south wall with nothing standing in their rows to scold them.
