Watercolour-style rose on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large rose in full bloom fills the frame, shaded with smooth gradients from orange and yellow through pink and magenta to blue and purple. Teal and green splashes and running drips around the petals give a loose watercolour effect. Bright colour dominates the composition against the plain skin of the upper arm.

Dear Frank,

The 6.15 ran straight through Carrow Junction this morning without slowing, so the flowers on platform two got a fright and the window cleaner nearly came off his ladder. I have been shaking petals off my coat ever since. Mr Oakley says the rose I painted on the old ticket office shutter is the only thing on the line that still looks like it means well.
I did it the way you taught me, orange first, wet into wet, then the pink dragged in while the wash still shines. The blue went on last, dropped in at the edge so it would run, the way the rain ran off the canopy the night you left. I never told you that I stood under that awning until the last train had gone, watching the paint in the tin grow thinner and thinner.
The drips were an accident. My hand jumped when the guard shouted, and a bead of teal slid past the petals and ran down to the sill. I almost wiped it away, then thought of your notebook full of spilt tea rings and left it. Now the rose looks as though it is slowly melting into the brickwork, and people stop on their way to the bridge to ask whether it is wet.
Come home at Christmas if the timetable allows. The 16.02 from Hallowby still stops here on Sundays. I will leave the shutter open so you can see the rose from the platform, and I will stand where you used to stand, under the awning, and wait for the first drop to fall.
Your loving sister, Nell
