Blue rose with watercolour splashes on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large blue rose with shaded petals and soft highlights forms the central subject, set against loose splashes of yellow, orange, purple and black. The rose is rendered with detailed realistic shading, while the surrounding splatters and thin black linework give the piece a painterly, abstract edge. Colour ink dominates the image, and the tattoo sits on a fleshy, muscular limb photographed against a dark background.

You shutter the stall on Dock Street at half eleven, when the last taxi has gone and the gutters still hold the afternoon's rain. Three roses stand in a jam jar on the counter, their stems drinking a blue that Mr Okonedo at the wholesale market swore no florist could coax from a bloom. Nobody grows a blue rose, he said, only fools try.

Tonight the shop window looks like a painter's rag. Yellow from the bakery lamp across the road, a bruise of purple where the bus shelter sits, black where the drainpipe spat ink-dark water down the glass. You had cut the dye with the sign-writer's black you kept for lettering, meaning only to tint the edges, but the colour crept inward the way watercolour does when someone drops a loaded brush into a jar of clean water and watches it bloom.
At twelve a woman in a wet coat knocks on the glass, not for flowers but to ask whether you have anything that will last past Sunday. You give her the jar. She tucks it under her arm and walks towards the river, and you watch the blue shape of it bob beneath the streetlights until the corner takes it.
By morning the water in the bucket has gone cloudy and the cut stems have darkened to the colour of a vein. You pour it into the drain outside. It runs off down the kerb in a thin blue thread, clearing as it goes, and for a moment the whole gutter looks as though someone in a hurry has painted it.
