Pink and blue rose on the top of a foot

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A large rose in full bloom sits across the top of a foot, with a pink centre curling into layered petals shaded in blue and violet. The petals use soft blended shading and highlights to suggest volume, and the bright, saturated colour dominates the design. The rose is centred on the foot against a teal background, with the toes visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third bucket of roses had gone the wrong shade by eleven, and Nell Fairweather stood in the cold back room of the Pier Street florist's with violet dye drying on her knuckles, deciding whether a bride would notice. Saturday was the Okafor-Lane wedding. Ruth had asked for roses the colour of a sky just before rain, pink at the heart and blue at the edges, and the wholesaler had sent nothing but cream and a few tired reds.

Nell had found the answer in a biscuit tin under the counter. Inside were her grandmother Ivy's notes from 1962, when blue roses did not exist and Ivy had simply soaked white ones in a copper pan on the hob, pink dye in the middle and indigo at the rim, and walked down the aisle carrying them with her chin up. The handwriting went brown at the edges. Nell followed it step by step, soaking each stem overnight and then rinsing the petals in cool water so the colours would bleed into each other rather than sit in stripes.

By four in the morning the room smelled of wet leaves and vinegar. Nell wrapped the blooms in newspaper, one at a time, and noticed that the blue had crept up some petals and stopped short on others, leaving a soft violet fold where two colours met. She had been about to redo them. Instead she set the last one down and sat on an upturned crate, because it looked like the photographs Ivy kept of herself, unevenly lit and entirely certain.

On Saturday Ruth pinned a single rose to her lapel and laughed when the petals brushed her chin. Nell stood at the back of the church with her hands folded, and only after the vows did she notice a faint blue smudge on her thumb that no amount of scrubbing would shift. She left it there.
