Dreamcatcher with watercolour splashes on ribs
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A large dreamcatcher with a circular hoop, woven web and two hanging feathers sits on the side of the ribcage. The linework is dark and fine, with the feathers shaded in soft greys. Pink, purple and teal watercolour washes sit behind the web and spread along the feathers, and a maroon garment is visible at the lower edge of the frame.

The gulls had been at the herring heads again, so Iris Hallows spent the early light on her knees along the slipway, picking grey feathers out of the weed before the tide could take them. Her hands were numb to the wrist. Behind her the harbour lay flat and pink, and she counted the boats still out past the breakwater the way her mother had once counted rosary beads.

Four of the Ardent's crew were overdue. Her brother Davy was the youngest, and he had promised he would be back for the lifting of the nets, and he had never once kept a promise on the day he made it. So she sat on an upturned crab pot with a hoop of willow across her lap and wove. Waxed twine went round and round the ring, in and out, until the web held the light the way a good net does, bright in some places and grey in others. She threaded a bead of blue sea glass through the centre. Her mother had said such webs caught bad dreams before they reached a sleeper. Iris had never believed it, but she had never stopped making them.
The Ardent came round the wall at half past seven with one engine coughing and no lights showing. Davy stood at the rail with his cap crushed in one fist, and when he jumped the gap onto the quay she was already holding out a smaller hoop she had made from the offcuts, with three feathers tied to its base in a long grey tail.
"For the mast," she said. He turned it over, laughed, then stopped laughing, because he had seen the large one hanging in the boathouse window with the last of the sunset running through its web, and the feathers stirring every time the door sighed open.
