Watercolour tree, compass and clock on back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A bare upper back shows a large tattoo combining a sketched, twisting tree with a compass rose and a clock face with Roman numerals surrounded by cog wheels, the gears extending onto the shoulder. The tree, compass and clock are rendered in grey linework and shading, while loose watercolour-style splashes in pink, red, orange, blue and purple fill the background. The composition runs diagonally from the shoulder blade down the centre of the back, with the tree trunk as the main line.

Nobody in Fenmoor went past the Crooked Ash after dark, though everyone agreed it had been straight once. It grew at the forest's edge where the last cottage gave way to bracken, and its trunk wound up through the air like a man trying to see over a wall. Old Tobias Quill, who mended clocks for the whole valley, said the bend was the tree listening for the hour.

The summer his daughter Ada turned twelve, the mill bell cracked and the village had no way to know when to bring in the hay. Ada climbed the Ash with her father's brass compass in her apron pocket and a pot of ochre paint, because the tree had told her in a dream that it would give up its north if she gave it something to show. She painted a ring of colour on the bark, orange and rust and a blue like cold river water, and where the paint ran down she saw it pool into the roots and bloom as though the wood were drinking.
When she came down, the compass needle would not settle, and the cogs her father had left on the bench began to clatter in their tray. Quill carried his lens to the old clock face in the square and found its hands had stopped at the moment Ada touched the trunk. The villagers gathered with lanterns. Nobody spoke, and the wind moved through the bracken so it looked like a tide going out.
They say the hay was in by Michaelmas. They also say the Ash now points east for lost things and west for the sea, and that if you walk past it at dusk you can hear a small girl counting the hours in colours, one pot at a time.
