Watercolour world map on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A world map with continents and landmasses is tattooed across the forearm of a person wearing a dark top. The shapes have fine outlines with soft, bleeding washes of blue, pink, purple and orange, giving a loose watercolour effect. The tattoo sits centrally on a blurred pale background, with the arm filling most of the frame.

The rain came through the roof hatch again last night, and the world on the cabin wall has gone soft. You'll remember Dad's map, the one he painted at the tiller before his hands shook. The Atlantic ran into the Thames and the Americas dissolved into lilac. I tried drying it by the stove. All it did was lift the pink from Africa and spread it over Madagascar like a bruise.

I took it to the towpath this morning and sat with it on my knees while the Maud ticked over. A heron watched me from the far bank as if I owed it money. Under the wash, though, every coast is still there, because he always inked the outline first. Rain can blur a colour but it can't move a line that was drawn properly.
So I've been tracing them in pencil: Cape Horn, then Lisbon, then the bit of Scotland where he promised we'd buy a cottage with a proper garden. My eyes are worse than his ever were. I've reached the Bay of Biscay, and the blue there is holding.
Come up at Easter if you can. Bring the fine pens. We'll finish Australia together, and you can tell me which bits you've decided to leave faded.
