Tulips and leaves on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two stacked photographs show the same forearm with a black and grey tattoo of tulip buds and long leaves running from the wrist towards the elbow. The linework is bold and dense, with hatched and stippled shading inside the petals and fine dotted accents scattered across the skin. The image is cropped tightly to the arm against a white textured wall.

The frost came down the valley of Ysmere three nights before the Midsummer Fair, and Tobiah Marl went out with a lantern to see what it had done to the bulbs. Every bed in the royal glasshouse was white at the edges. He knelt in the cold soil and counted the blooms already opened, then the ones still closed, tight as fists, their green coats split just enough to show a first thread of colour.

The steward, Lady Venn, had promised the Queen a carpet of tulips for the great hall, and the Queen did not forgive delays. Tobiah had bred the new strain himself, crossing the dark tulips of the eastern hills with the pale ones from the harbour walls, and each bloom had cost him a season. He slid his fingers beneath the leaves, where the long blades ran down the stems like the ribs of a sword, and pressed his thumb into the damp earth, marking where each seed would go.

By dawn he had a plan. He would not wait for the sun. He carried the closed buds into the stove room one at a time, wrapped in wool, and set them in trays of warm sand beside the furnace. Hour by hour he watched the petals loosen and the careful lines of shadow spread through them, until the room smelt of wet clay and something sweeter, and the buds that had been stubborn all winter stood up like sleepers waking.

When the Queen crossed the hall at noon, the tulips stood in rows of black and silver across the flagstones, every one open to the light. She stopped before the first bloom, looked at the dots of frost still clinging to its leaves, and asked who had done it. Tobiah said nothing. He had learned that the best gardeners let the flowers take the credit.
