Skateboard heart with rose and banner

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of a heart formed by two crossed skateboards, with a rose and several leaves behind it and a blank ribbon banner across the lower half. The linework is bold and even, with wood grain lines shading the skateboards and petal lines defining the rose. The drawing is in black ink on cream paper, with no colour and a plain, uncluttered composition.

Dear Mo, the council has finally put a fence round the old bowl at Cragside, so the concrete we spent our whole fifteenth summer grinding is now a car park for the bin lorry. I walked past it on Tuesday with my board under my arm like a briefcase and felt daft. You remember the crossed decks we painted in your mum's garage, the ones that looked like a heart if you squinted and had a bit of wine in you? Mine's still in the loft, wheels seized, grip tape gone the colour of weak tea.

I found the old sketchbook in a box marked BOOKS, and there was the drawing you did for me the week before my dad moved us to Leeds. Two boards crossed under a rose, leaves tumbling round the edges like you'd spilled them, and a blank ribbon across the bottom because you said I'd write the words myself once I had some. I never did. I kept meaning to, the way you keep meaning to ring someone back.

So here are the words, in the only handwriting I've got. We were never going to be pros. We fell off the rail at Hebden and laughed till the gravel stung. The rose was always going to wilt and the boards were always going to chip. Still, I'd take the bowl and the bruises again tomorrow.

If you're ever up this way, the ribbon's still blank on my side. Bring a pen.
