Fine line script quote on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black fine line script tattoo in two lines reads oh darling, let's be adventurous across the inner forearm. The thin, even linework is set against smooth skin, with a white lace sleeve at the wrist and a blurred green woodland background. The composition is shallow in depth of field, keeping the tattoo sharp and central.

You write it on the back of the coal board's notice, the one saying the cage will run late on Thursday, because the blank side is the only paper left in the house that isn't owed to someone. The pencil is down to a stub. Beyond the back wall the pit wheel turns over the slag heap like a slow thought, and Dorothy next door is shouting at her goat again.

You have written the words four times and crossed out three. Oh darling, let's be adventurous. It sounds daft beside a cold range, but it is the only sentence you own that is not a list of what the rent is or whether the lamp oil will last until Sunday. Tom has never been further than Carlisle on the church outing. You want to show him the sea at Whitley Bay, a bag of vinegar chips eaten on a bench, a hat bought for a shilling that blows off in the wind and makes you both laugh.

He comes in with the black still on his face and reads it over your shoulder. He says nothing for so long that the clock on the dresser seems to get louder. Then he takes the stub from your fingers and adds a line underneath in his careful capitals: TUESDAY. BRING THE HAT.

When he hands it back, his thumb has left a grey print beside the words, a small smudge of the pit that will not wash off no matter how hard he scrubs. You fold the notice into your apron pocket and decide the smudge looks like a map.
