Web-winged butterfly design in lilac
Colour · Flash
A symmetrical design shows a butterfly-like form whose wings are built from spiderweb strands ending in curled tendrils, with a small dark body at the centre. The linework is smooth and dark-edged, with soft lilac and purple shading that fades toward the white background. The composition is centred and fills most of the frame.

The rain had been coming sideways off the awnings of Hollin Street market since dawn, and by four o'clock the stallholders had stopped pretending to be cheerful. You had the lilac silk bundled in both hands, the one the widow from Ashby sold you for two pounds. She said it had been her mother's and she could no longer bear to see it folded in a drawer. It was far too fine for a wet Saturday. You held it anyway, because you had decided that whatever the rain touched that day would belong to you.

Across the aisle, Mr Okonedo watched you turn the cloth over under his tarpaulin. He sold buttons and lace from tins that had been rusting since his father's time. 'Spiders rebuild in the wet,' he said, nodding at a cobweb-fine trim pinned to his board. 'Every morning they make back what the weather took. Mind you remember that when you come back to pay.' You laughed, but he didn't. He was already tying down his awning against the wind.
Instead of paying, you carried the silk to Ruth's dye shed behind the fish market, where the vats steamed like kettles. Ruth lifted the cloth on a hooked pole and lowered it into the violet bath, and the colour took unevenly, paler in the middle and deepening toward the edges where the threads had worn thin. She held it up to the bulb. 'There,' she said. 'Now it looks like it's been caught out in something.'
You walked home with the silk folded over your arm and the rain beading on it like dew on wire. At the corner of Pell Lane a single spider had strung a web between the lamp post and the railings. Something pale and bright was caught in the middle of it, turning slowly in the drizzle, still working its wings.
