Ornate butterfly line design
Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical butterfly drawn in black linework, with curling tendrils and heart-shaped motifs filling the wings and a slender body at the centre. The lines are solid and even, with dense detail in the wings and open space toward the antennae. The design is shown in black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The wasps have found the windfalls under the Bramley, so you walk the rows with a bucket on your hip and step around the split fruit, counting the trees you have not yet picked. Your grandfather planted this orchard the year the railway came through, and he swore the old Blenheim on the north corner was the only one that never lied about its crop. Today it is bare of everything but leaves gone faintly silver at the edges.

The butterfly arrives at noon, when the heat sits flat on the grass. It is a big one, black-winged and lace-cut, the kind of pattern a woman might stitch onto a christening gown if she had too much patience and too little sleep. Its wings are full of little hearts, pinched at the bottom, and tendrils curl off them like the ends of a ribbon someone forgot to tie. It lands on the handle of your bucket and does not leave when you flap at it.
Your cousin Ruth says the old stories have it that a butterfly on the fruit means somebody in the house is going to marry badly. You tell her it means nothing except that the wasps are not the only things that want the windfalls. She laughs and goes back to the ladder. You watch the butterfly walk, one foot at a time, to the rim of the bucket, and you notice that the hearts on its wings all face the same way, toward the house.
By four o'clock the bucket is full and the butterfly has gone. In its place, pressed flat in the dust of the lane, is a single black scrap of wing no bigger than a thumbnail, and on it one heart, perfectly whole. You pick it up, fold it into the pocket of your apron, and carry the apples home without once looking back at the Blenheim.
