The rain had come in sideways over the fruit market by eleven, so Dolores dragged the tarpaulin across her stall and counted the umbrellas again. Forty-one. Lost property from the station across the road, bought by the sack from the council and sold on by the kilo to anyone with a pound and no particular feelings about the weather.

A lad in a soaked hood stopped at the front of the stall, looked along the rows of spokes and bent ribs, and asked which one was best. "Which one do you want?" He shrugged. "Whatever." She had heard that answer so often this winter that it had stopped being a word and become a kind of weather. She pulled out a green one with a snapped rib, folded it, and held it out. He paid in coppers, thanked the pavement, and walked off with it furled like a walking stick.

Three days later he was back, hood dripping, the green umbrella now bound along the break with gaffer tape. He wanted a tag for it, he said, something to stop people nicking it on the bus. Dolores had a roll of card and a marker pen that still worked. She wrote the word in capitals, spacing the letters out the way the old signwriter on Cross Street had taught her, so each one had room to breathe. The letters climbed the card at a slant.

"That's not a joke," he said. "No," she said. "It's a description." He studied it for a long time while the rain drummed on the tarpaulin, then tucked the tag into the handle and went out into the grey without once saying the word.
