White ink mandala design on hand

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with white ink mandala and floral designs covering the back of the hand, the wrist and several fingers. The fine white linework forms dots, scalloped borders, teardrop shapes and symmetrical patterns that stand out against the warm skin tone. Several silver rings and glitter nails in a mauve shade sit against a plain white background.

Dear Nell, the sea has been flat as a pressed sheet for nine days now, so I have had time to finish the border work on the cabin table you gave me. You will laugh, but I have been drawing on my own hand with the white ink the chandler sold us in Lisbon, because the dots are the hardest thing to keep even and a hand holds still better than paper does when the ship leans. Mr Okafor, the second mate, watches me do it each evening and says nothing, which for him is praise.

The scallops came out right on the third try. I used a teardrop for every fifth point, the way Mama did on the wedding shawl, and the little rosettes I left for the wrist where the cuff of a glove would hide them, though there is no glove in this heat. Ruth from the galley says the lines look like frost on a window. I told her frost is only water that has decided on a pattern, and she thought that was very clever of me, though I had got it from a book.

When we make Freetown I mean to buy a silver ring for the last finger, the one that has nothing on it. I have counted the rings in my tin and there are seven, which is a lucky number for a voyage, and an eighth would be greedy. Keep my spare thimble safe in the drawer. I will write again from the Cape, and if the weather turns I will draw the storm into the design so that it can never touch us. Your loving sister, Clara.
