Silver metallic geometric designs on both hands
Geometric · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands are shown palm up against a pale, textured background. The metallic silver designs use chevrons, diamonds and triangles, with blue inlay accents in the centres of several motifs. The linework is crisp and even, and the larger diamond on the right palm is the focal point of the composition.

The chart room on the Marisol smelled of salt and lamp oil, and Tomasz had pinned the star charts to the bulkhead so the swell wouldn't shake them loose. Every night for three weeks I copied the same diamond into the margin of my logbook, the one with the notched edges, because Captain Ferreira said a navigator should draw what he cannot yet read. The chevrons were for the wind bands. The little blue lozenges were the islands we had been promised and never seen.

On the thirty-first day the glass dropped and stayed dropped. We reefed down, and the crew sat in the lee of the galley singing the old Lisbon songs while the spray came over the rail in sheets. Tomasz found me at the wheel with my palms flat on the wood, rubbing silver paint from my knuckles. He said the paint would not come off until we reached dry land, and that the ship's cook had mixed it from ground tin and a little blue ink he had stolen from the purser. I told him I had never asked for it. He said nobody asks for the things a voyage gives them.
When the cloud broke at dawn there was a long low shape on the horizon, a single peak with a notch cut through its ridge, exactly as I had drawn it. Ferreira would not let anyone cheer until the anchor was down. I stood at the rail and laid my right hand on the warm brass, and the light caught the diamond on my palm and threw it out across the water like a second, brighter coastline.
