The big top is down to three poles now and the canvas has more patches than original. Mr Tobler sold the elephant to a farm outside Leeds in March, and we have the last of the Thursday crowds, mostly children who have been told they are seeing something historic. I still do the arms before every show. Nobody pays for it any more, but the aerialists ask, and so I go on mixing the white paste in the old jam jar.

Yesterday I did Ines's forearms for the silks act. I started with the scalloped cuff at the wrist, then the diamond lattice that runs up toward the elbow, the way you taught me, dotting each little diamond with the tip of a cocktail stick so it does not smudge under the lights. She watched me the whole time and said the lace looked like something a bride would wear to a funeral. I laughed, but she was right. We are dressing up for a wake.

Still, when she climbed the rope with the paisley curling white over her knuckles, the front rows went quiet in the way they used to. For a minute the old tent felt full. I want you to know I thought of you at the bottom of the ladder, calling up the dots and the little flower shapes, telling me the lace would hold if I kept my hand steady.
