Gold and blue mandala designs on hands
Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are crossed over each other on sand, with metallic gold and blue mandala-style designs on the back of the hand and forearm. The floral motifs use bold blue petals with teal and gold outlines, plus dotted lines running across the fingers and wrist. The image is warm in tone, and the metallic inks contrast with the skin, while silver rings and white nails sit in the foreground.

The clerk at Sallow Ford kept her ink pot beside the river gauge, because the water rose faster than the officials did. Travellers came down the bank with their papers wrapped in oilcloth, and she read each one by the light of a brass lamp, asking only where they were going and what they carried. Most answered plainly. One old carter said he carried nothing but a bolt of blue cloth for his sister, and she asked him to unroll a corner of it on the sand.

The pattern was a flower with eight petals, each one filled deep as a night sky and edged with a thread of gold. Along its border ran a row of small pale dots, like stones set in a path. She had seen such a flower once before, painted on the gate of the village where her mother was born. The carter said his sister had stitched it from a dream, and that the dots were the crossings she had made before him, each one counted. The clerk did not believe in dreams at the ford, but she knew a map when she saw one.
She stamped his papers and let him pass. When he had gone, she knelt in the wet sand and copied the swirl with a stick, curl by curl, until the leaf shape closed on itself. She marked the dots beside it.
The next morning the river had come over the ford and taken the stamp pot, but the line she drew stayed dry on the bank, and the boatmen who came after her used it to find the shallow water.
