Gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

Several arms and hands are shown with gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos. The motifs include coin and dot clusters, bangle-style bands, a chain with a leaf-like feather, and a silver feather on the forearm. The linework is fine and the metallic foil catches the light against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dance hall at Carrow Pier had a bad floor and a worse piano, and every Saturday the girls came in with their wrists bare and went out jangling. Mrs Abernathy, who kept the coat room, said the coins came from a tinsmith in the next county who sold them by the sheet for a shilling and would not say what he put on them. Nobody believed the gold would last past midnight. They wore it anyway.

Nell Tarrant came up from the fish quay that winter with a paper packet of feathers cut from thin tin and a chain of links she had bent herself. She stood at the cloakroom counter with her sleeves rolled to the elbow and asked who wanted to dance properly. Three of the girls laughed. The fourth, Ada Penrose, held out her forearm without a word, and Nell pressed a silver feather onto it and rubbed it with a damp thumb until it held.

The band played until the candles guttered. Ada danced with a drover's boy, then with a sailor, then with the piano player's sister, and each time the metal caught the lamplight and the room seemed to lean towards her. Near two o'clock the gold coins on the others had begun to dull and lift at their edges. Ada's feather stayed bright. When the boy asked why, she told him somebody had given it to her rather than sold it, and he said that was a daft reason for a tin feather to behave itself.

By morning the gold was gone from the coat room and the boards were dusted with flakes like sea salt. Nell sat on the pier steps, rubbing at a bit of gold still stuck under her nail. Ada came down with the feather glinting on her arm and sat beside her. Neither spoke for a while. Then Ada held the arm out to the grey light, and the feather threw a small, cold moon across the white stone of the steps.
