White mask with flowers on upper arm
Japanese · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A white, featureless mask with black marks for eyes and mouth sits at the centre of a dense cluster of peony-like flowers and leaves. The work is built from black linework with grey shading in the petals and foliage, and the mask is left as clean skin-toned negative space. Two small red and orange tags with black markings sit at the left edge, adding the only colour to an otherwise monochrome composition.

At the wedding of Hanne Mald to the miller's son, nobody had invited the stranger in the white mask. He came up the lane at dusk carrying a bundle of peony cuttings wrapped in wet paper, and the gatekeeper, old Tobias, let him pass because the mask had no face to refuse.

He walked to the long table and set the peonies down beside the bride's cup. Nobody spoke. The flowers were the deep red of cut meat and they smelled of rain, and when the bride's mother reached to push them away, every petal had already opened on its own. The stranger said nothing. He only pressed two paper charms into the wooden table, one red, one orange, and their black markings sank into the grain like stitches being drawn tight.
The bride's mother asked what he wanted. The mask tilted, as if listening to the wind in the apple trees, and then it turned to Hanne. Hanne was twelve days from being married and had not yet said the words she meant to say to her father. She said them then, quietly, and the mask nodded once, the way a man does when a debt has been settled.
They say the wedding went on until morning. By the time the lanterns were out, the peonies had dropped every petal onto the flagstones, and the miller's son found that his bride could sing again, which she had not done since she was a girl. The stranger was gone. The charms stayed on the table, and every year after, the family hung one above the door and planted the peony cuttings in the yard.
