White octopus with bubbles on a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A white octopus with a black outline curls its tentacles across the back of a hand, with the ends of the arms spiralling outward. Small black-outlined bubbles float on either side of the body. The linework is bold and the fill is a flat pale white, with the black dotted suckers along the tentacles, and the design sits centrally on the hand against a plain green background.

The boats came home from the Skerry grounds with empty holds three weeks running, and Tam Yule swore it was the white octopus again, sitting on the bank where the old wreck lay and asking for a toll.

Nobody in Carrick Haven believed him until the fourth week, when the nets came up whole and clean, every knot tied the way it had been tied, and a single pale arm lay folded across the top rope like a sleeve laid over a chair. Maggie Orr, who mended the nets for her father's boat and had no patience for fancies, lifted it off the rope herself. It was cold and it did not pull away. It curled once round her wrist, slowly, the way a child tests a new word, and then let go.

The old women said you could not take from the sea without giving something back. So the fleet agreed on a payment: the first fish of every morning would go over the stern unclaimed, and each man would breathe out a bubble for it, and no one would say the creature's name aloud while the boats were out.

The catches came back. Maggie kept the arm in a bucket of seawater on the quay and talked to it when no one was near, and her father never asked what she said. On the last morning of the herring season he rowed out alone, the sea lay flat and bright, and far below the hull something pale unfurled. A ring of small silver bubbles rose up around his oars like a crown, and he did not look down again until he was home.
