White ornamental swirls across a back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a woman seen from behind, with dark hair falling over one shoulder and a large white ornamental design across her back. The design is made of fine, flowing scrolls and swirls that run from the shoulders down towards the waist, with some loops and curls that look almost filigree. The ink is pale against the skin, so the piece reads as light lines on a warm, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ilse had sewn the pattern into the lining of her coat three nights running, and on the fourth morning the customs man at the bridge was still turning the pages of her grandmother's pattern book as though he could read the scrolls. "Lace," she said. "Only lace." He held the book up to the grey light coming off the river, the pale pencil loops and curls crowding the margins like frost on a window.

He asked what the swirls were for. She told him they were the bobbins' way of talking, that each curl was a turn of thread, that her grandmother had pricked them onto card in a village where winter lasted until April and nobody had anything to do but count stitches. He did not believe her, but he did not want to be the man who burned a dead woman's drawings on a Tuesday either.
He tapped a spiral that ran off the edge of the page and said it looked more like a tide than a flower. Ilse said nothing. The real lace was not in the book at all. It was in her coat, worked in fine linen thread that had taken her grandmother a winter to finish, every loop exactly where the old woman had wanted it.
The customs man closed the book, gave it back, and waved her on. Ilse walked across the planks with the river pale beneath her and the lace lying flat under her coat, carrying the curls over the border the way they had always been carried, out of sight and entirely intact.
