Peony tattoos on hip and thigh

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Large peony blooms are drawn in bold black outline across the hip and buttock, with a smaller flower continuing onto the upper thigh. The linework is clean and the petals are left unshaded, so the skin shows through the open areas. The image is a close, soft-focus shot with warm tones and a pale pink garment at the centre.

Hold the lamp closer, for ink won't show you its truth in this light. You want the lines, not the shadow. Ada Crane kept the print shop above the fish market in Porthowan, and every summer the boats came in heavy with mackerel and the tourists came in with their silly questions, and every summer she drew peonies on the backs of the bills of lading, because her mother had grown them in a tin bath on the quay wall.

Her rule was simple. Outline everything, fill nothing. A peony opens from the inside, she said, and the light has to get in to do it. So she drew the great heavy heads with a fine nib, petal over petal, and left each one bare, the paper showing through like sea through a shallow pool. The fishermen thought it a waste of good black ink. Old Tobias Rowe, who had lost two brothers to the Atlantic, said nothing about it for a year, then came in one February with a letter from a widow in Penzance asking for a flower with no colour in it, only edges.

Ada drew it in an afternoon. The widow never came to collect it, and the drawing hung above the till until the damp got into the frame. When the shop was sold, the new owner found a sheet folded inside the ledger, every petal outlined, every centre left open, and beneath it, in pencil, a line that said fill it yourself, love, the light will do the rest.
