Wide-eyed owl perched on a branch
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised owl with two large round eyes sits on a gnarled branch, with a second owl-like head shape and feathered crest above. The drawing uses brown ink with fine hatching and stippling on the feathers and wings, with soft sepia tones and loose lines in the background. It is shown on textured cream paper as a flat sketch with no colour ink.

Cook Haddon swore the owl came aboard at Gravesend, roosting on the bowsprit with its eyes already open, and nobody on the Marjorie Lyle argued, because Haddon was the only man who could make salt beef taste of anything. Every night at the change of watch it settled on the galley rail, a brown bird with a crest like a scorched match head, and stared at the stove as if it were owed wages.

I had the midnight peeling, which meant potatoes, a lamp, and the owl. I took to talking to it the way you talk to a dog that won't be fed. It never blinked. Its eyes were round as ship's pennies and twice as hard to read, and it turned its head so far round to watch the bilge hatch that I half expected the neck to crack. Haddon said it was only minding the rats, and I believed him for a month.
Then, off the Lizard in a dead calm, the owl dropped from the rail and walked the length of the deck to the forward hatch, the way a clerk walks to a door he already knows is locked. I followed with the lamp. Under the planking a rivet was weeping, a thin grey thread no thicker than a bootlace, and the sea was singing on the other side of the wood.
I rang the bell until the watch came up with buckets. We pumped her dry by dawn and nobody drowned. When I looked for the owl it was back on the rail, both of its faces turned to me, and I swear the lower one looked pleased. I gave it the heel of the loaf. It never ate it. It just kept watch, the way Haddon says a good cook keeps an eye on the pot.
