Black and grey botanical tattoo of daisies and wildflowers with leaves and buds on the outer thigh, with a woman lifting a patterned skirt beside it.

Wildflower bouquet on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A bouquet of daisies, larger open blooms, buds and sprigs of foliage runs up the outer thigh. The linework is dark and detailed, with shading in the petals and leaves that gives the flowers some depth. The image is in black ink and grey tones, and the tattoo fills the lower centre of the frame against a patterned skirt and a pale bedspread.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hester Lamb had been stripping the towpath verges since Hatton lock, filling her apron with ox-eye daisies, the fat-headed kind whose petals curled back as if they were tired of standing up, plus yarrow and the green buds of dock that she had no use for. Her father said she was wasting daylight, and he was right, because the sky over the Warwickshire hills was already the colour of wet slate.

She climbed onto the coal-black roof of the Patience to lay her haul on the cabin step while Joseph held the tiller against the wind. The rain came in a grey wall before she could finish. She tied the stems with a length of bramble-coloured twine, the way her mother had shown her, and wedged them in a jam jar on the stove shelf where the damp could not reach them.

At Knowle, the lock-keeper's girl, Nell Ashby, came running along the path with a tin of pencils. She had seen the flowers through the cabin window and wanted to draw them before they wilted, shading the petals with her thumb until the paper went soft and grey. Hester watched her work, and for once said nothing about the time.

The daisies were brown at the edges by the time the boat reached Birmingham. Nell's drawing stayed pinned above the lock-keeper's kettle, and it looked fresher than anything growing on the towpath.
