Floral bouquet on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large bouquet of flowers, including daisy-like blooms, buds and leafy sprigs, is tattooed on the side of a thigh. The work uses fine outlines with soft grey shading to give the petals and foliage depth. The bouquet sits diagonally across the skin, with a patterned skirt held up beside it.

Hollis drew the daisies first, on the back of a delivery docket, while the van ticked and cooled against a fence post. He never used black. He said black made everything look like a funeral, and these were going to a wedding, so he shaded them in grey pencil, pressing lightly so the petals seemed to lift off the paper.

We had two hundred stems wrapped in wet newspaper in the back, bound for a homestead in the ranges, and the radiator had given up forty kilometres back. Nobody came by. The road ran flat and white to the edge of the heat, and a road train passed close enough to rock us on the shoulder, its driver lifting one finger off the wheel as if we were any other breakdown.

Hollis's bouquet grew across the docket while the sun moved. Buds first, then the big open daisies with their dark centres, then sprigs of something feathery he couldn't name and didn't bother to. I held the tarp over him and watched his hand go soft and careful. By the time the tow truck came up from the roadhouse, the real flowers had gone limp in the back and the newspaper was soaked through.

The bride never saw the wilted bunches. The homestead cook binned them and pinned the docket above her stove instead, because someone had drawn on it and she said it was too good to throw out. Hollis's grey daisies stayed up there for years, holding their shape longer than anything we ever carried.
